What do I do if my target, house, whatever, is
covered by clouds or too blurry? - Punt, buy a real GPS unit or check back
every few months and hope the next satellite image is different.
I stopped making a path and now want to add to
it or edit it. - This is really hard for someone with very modest computer
skills. Delete and start a new path. If you have good computer skills, read the
tutorial AGAIN and fiddle with the right click button a lot. Save the file
before making any changes. You can always delete and reload it.

Nokia PDAs
|
|
I have a Nokia N95 here in Costa Rica.
DO you have maps that support it? - My brother-in-law bought a N95 too. We found out two
things. Getting any third party software to pick up
the data stream from the embedded GPS receiver is very
tricky. (An embedded GPS receiver is not a great thing
because of battery life and they work best on the
dash, in the sun.)
The N95 version of S60 operating system is a recent
update and is NOT very compatible with software
developed for S60v2. We’ve found two programs
(including the map program) that won’t load on a N95.
Unless you have a compelling reason to keep it you
might try swapping it in for any good Windows Mobile 6
PDA.

Recommended GPS receiver

I would like to know what type of portable GPS unit you would recommend for travel and local use. I would like a nice image and voice commands if possible. - If you intend to bring your GPS with you to CR, the
only choice now is Garmin. Pay a premium for memory
storage and DON’T buy a unit that only loads via maps
on SD cards. Check the Garmin website for the manual of any model you are considering. If It DOESN'T tell about a procedure (usually in the Managing your files" section) to use MapSource to load new maps or data ... DON'T BUY IT!!!
MapSource is a "free" Gamin software program that is a fabulously useful tool but if your model won't talk to it really isn't doing anything for you. If you have a model that loads maps via MapSource, you have two ways to look at the map YOU PAID FOR. You can plan trips, routes and identify waypoints in the comfort of your home, before getting out in traffic.

Datum
|
|
What datum setting is used in Costa Rica? - Datum is not associated with a specific country, although countries' official mapping agencies often do have a preference and policy. The GPS satellites are engineered to supply information that is 100% absolutely accurate. The earth is not a perfect sphere. When you apply this 100% accurate data to a real world map or position on the ground there is an error induced by this "irregularity". Datum is associated with the coordinate system used for the mapping system or device. If asked by a GPS or map system to define the datum, it's asking how to interpret and correct the data you are supplying.
See Wkipedia.org/wiki/Datum
If you have no specific information otherwise, use WGS84 and you should have no objectionable inaccuracy for NON-CRITICAL guidance. DO NOT USE AN ARBITRARILY CHOSEN DATUM FOR CRITICAL NAVIGATION, LIKE AVIATION OR MARINE APPLICATIONS. You should use charts, maps or data sources that are specifically meant for critical guidance and they will ALWAYS specify the datum.
